Asheboro, N.C. – May 17, 2021 - The North Carolina Zoo announces the birth of three litters of critically endangered American red wolves as part of its red wolf breeding program.  This is the first time in the Zoo’s breeding program that three litters were born in one spring.

Asheboro, N.C. – (April 19, 2021) Earth Day, first celebrated on April 22, 1970, has been observed by the North Carolina Zoo each year since 1996. Rather than allowing the occasion to pass in 2021, we will work around COVID-19 challenges so you may celebrate Earth Day with proper distancing.  

Asheboro, N.C. (March 4, 2021) – The North Carolina Zoo was recently awarded a $50,000 grant from The Association of Zoos and Aquariums (AZA) as part of the: Saving Animals from Extinction® (SAFE) program. The grant is for the project titled “Ensuring Protection of the World’s Largest Black Rhino Population in the Face of the Global Corona Virus Pandemic.”

Asheboro, N.C., January 28, 2021 - The North Carolina Zoo's conservation work goes far beyond the Zoo's 2,600 acres of land in North Carolina. The Zoo's UNITE for the Environment program worked with teachers in Uganda, a small country located in east Africa.

Asheboro, N.C. – Jan. 22, 2021 The North Carolina Zoo welcomes its newest resident, a 1,000-pound male polar bear, as part of its breeding efforts. The Zoo is hopeful the addition to the polar bear family will result in new offspring.  

Asheboro, N.C. Oct. 27, 2020  - North Carolina Zoo Volunteer Coordinator Toy Lambeth was honored with Governor’s Awards for Excellence for Human Relations on Tuesday, Oct. 27. It is the highest honor a state employee may receive.

Asheboro, N.C. – Sept 3, 2020 - The wild, fearless, feline hunters are rarely seen by humans. Sand cats may be small but don’t let their petite size fool you. They’re wild, fearless hunters that kill venomous snakes in the desert. They’re also a rare sight to see, which is why the North Carolina Zoo is excited to announce the birth of a sand cat on Monday, Aug. 10.
