The Stone that Stands in an Empty Sky is a standing stone monument to the flocks of hundreds of Carolina Parakeets that once swooped into Randolph County in the spring and festooned the treetops with vibrant color. It is a memorial to a now extinct species.

The Stone that Stands in an Empty Sky is fabricated from steel and concrete.

Made possible through the North Carolina Zoo’s Visiting Artist program and an Anonymous donation to the NC Zoo Society
The Stone that Stands in an Empty Sky is located between the Red Wolf Habitat and the Desert Dome in North America.
A large stone with the shape of a bird that appears to be in flight carved into the middle of it. A canopy of trees and a clear sky are visible through and around the stone.
