Opportunities

Some people say their workplace is a zoo, but ours really is. Seasonal opportunities are organized for businesses, organizations, and service groups to volunteer together to make a difference in just a day. Groups often assist with projects such as painting, mulching, hiking trail maintenance, cleaning signage, paper Mache, animal enrichment projects, and special events. 

Time Commitments

Group sizes are limited to 15 participants. Projects are planned Monday through Friday, 9:00 a.m. to 12:00 p.m. Opportunities are organized based on project availability and are suitable for individuals ages 12 to adult.

To inquire about a project for your group, please contact Volunteer@NCZoo.org and provide the following information:

  • Name of organization or business  
  • Age range (adults or students)
  • Preferred availability (month, date range, day of the week, etc.)
  • Number of participants
  • Special notes

Animal Care

Volunteers provide routine daily care for injured, sick, and orphaned native wildlife until they are ready for release back into the wild.

Volunteers support the work of the Zoo's conservation and education team by engaging with guests and increasing awareness of conservation issues.

Volunteers are front-line members of the Guest Services Team helping facilitate personalized and memorable guest experiences.

Horticulture

Gardeners help with weeding and potting plants in the greenhouse and may also assist staff with the upkeep of Zoo grounds, Pollinator Gardens, and similar activities.

Volunteers provide insight into scientific research, animal behavior, and support the Zoo’s mission to improve animal welfare.

Volunteers facilitate play at Kidzone, a nature-based play area geared toward guests ages 3-10 years old. Kidzone is a place where children and their parents can play, explore, and interact with nature in a fun, safe environment.
