Engage with guests to provide information regarding the natural history and conservation of honey bees. A variety of resources are available at the habitat, such as a working observation hive, graphics, and pollination plants to increase guest awareness of honey bees and their importance. Honey bees are managed and cared for by Zookeeper staff and are not the responsibility of volunteers.
Applicants must be paying members of the North Carolina State Beekeeper Association to qualify for this position.
Time Commitments
Volunteers should be available to commit to two shifts each month,
Available Shifts: March - November, Wednesdays - Sundays, 10:00 a.m. - 3:00 p.m.
Summer only options: Available June – August with a minimum commitment of one shift weekly. Submit Volunteer Interest Form beginning May 3.
Training
Training will provide a review of beekeeping principles and the natural history of honey bees, with a focus on the significance of the honey bee to human and wildlife populations by pollination.
Age requirement
Minimum age requirement is 16 years old. Youth between the ages of 12 - 15 years old can volunteer for this assignment with their parent or legal guardian. This adult must complete all required documents, training and be available to serve alongside the child at each scheduled shift.

- Must complete step 2 to receive the Zoom link to attend
4. Onsite Zoo Visit
- March 7, 10, OR 11 | 9:00 a.m. - 11:30 a.m. (You will choose ONE date to attend)
- Must complete step 3 to attend
5. Complete on the job training
6. Begin volunteer shifts at the Zoo!
