Valerie H. Schindler Wildlife Rehabilitation Center

Valerie H. Schindler was a lady who loved animals and nature. She and her husband, Dr. Anton Schindler, raised a number of orphaned squirrels at their home and continued to enjoy watching them after their release.

When the North Carolina Zoological Society announced plans to open a Wildlife Rehabilitation Center at the Zoo, Dr. Schindler felt that naming the center in his wife's honor would be a fitting memorial to her.

Mr. Schindler contacted the Zoo Society and plans were put into motion to build the Valerie H. Schindler Wildlife Rehabilitation Center.

In August of 2001 that dream became a reality. In memory of the way Mrs. Schindler loved wild animals, the Center provides care to injured and orphaned native animals for the purpose of returning them to their natural habitats.
