The Streamside exhibit at the North Carolina Zoo highlights some of the plants and animals a stream may encounter on its path from the mountains to the coastal plains. Native wildlife such as the cottonmouth, bobcat and barred owl depend upon these freshwater habitats for survival.
On Exhibit: Water Snake, Otter, Bobcat, Turtles, Fish
Plants on Exhibit: Box Elder, Flowering Dogwood, more
Ecosystem: In addition to supporting freshwater wetland habitats, streams connect the ocean to other ecosystems. Water quality depends heavily upon land-based activities. Currents delivering water and nutrients to surrounding ecosystems and aquifers also carry pollutants from human activities. Destruction of freshwater resources could have wide reaching effects for ecosystems and human health.
