N.C. Zoo’s Sonora Desert exhibits desert wildlife. Covering parts of southern Arizona and California, the Sonoran is a lush desert with a large variety of plant and animal species. Some animals may be secretive, but keep your eyes open and use observation skills to find ocelot, collard lizard, elf owl and more.
On Exhibit: Elf Owl, Collard Lizards, Ocelot, Gila Monster, Desert Tortoise, Road Runner, Vampire Bats, Kangaroo Rats
Plants on Exhibit: Desert Agave, Sand Sagebrush, others. (Plant material displayed in this exhibit may vary according season.)
Ecosystem: Often thought of as barren wastelands, deserts are actually rich ecosystems teeming with biodiversity. Desert plants and animals have developed unique ways to use sporadic, unpredictable rainfall to their advantage. Despite the adaptability of its flora and fauna, this fragile ecosystem can easily be thrown off balance.
