N.C. Zoo’s prairie exhibit replicates a typical short-grass prairie. Look for large animals such as elk and bison but don’t pass by native vegetation such as Big bluestem. Depending on the season, visitors can view our prairie in full bloom, winter dormancy or after a prescribed burn.
On Exhibit: Bison, Elk , Grizzly bear, red wolves
Ecosystem: Dry climate, grassy vegetation and dependence on natural fire characterize prairies. Like African savannas, these ecosystems rely on resident wildlife for survival. Bison, elk and antelope trample soil and recycle nutrients, allowing grasses to flourish. Threatened by intensive agriculture, ranching, tourism and development, these ecosystems are among the most endangered.
