Our mysterious Cypress Swamp Habitat is a tangle of bald cypress trees, holly berries and rhododendron. The meandering boardwalks carry visitors by ducks nesting as they would in the wild, an artificial-rock alligator pond and an octagon-windowed kiosk with glass aquariums and terrariums where turtles paddle under water.
Our carnivorous plant garden with insect-eating pitcher plants and Venus fly traps is nestled along the trail. Cougars roam in a enclosure equipped with large rocks and fallen trees over natural streams and alligators sun on their own heated rocks.
N.C. Zoo’s swamp exhibit represents a southeastern bald cypress swamp. In addition to Cypress trees, visitors discover cougar, wood duck, alligators, and Yellow-bellied turtles. Native wildlife like northern water snakes and migratory birds also visit our swamp. Experience the beauty of wetlands while learning more about their natural value.
On Exhibit: Alligators, Cougars, Yellow-bellied turtle, Waterfowl, Amphibians
Ecosystem: Cypress swamps are forested wetlands appreciated for their natural beauty and a variety of plant and animal life. Dense vegetation provides food and shelter for many animals and Bald Cypress trees dominate the landscape. Historically swamps have been drained for agricultural use, land development potential and valuable rot-resistant cypress wood.
