The Black Bear habitat houses three bears rescued by wildlife agencies from roadside zoos or that had been labeled nuisance animals in the wild. The exhibit is complete with high cliffs, a pool for wading and a stream lined with natural trees.
The black bear exhibit at N.C. Zoo represents just one of the many habitats black bears can occupy. Visitors are encouraged to look for black bear clues such as tree rubbings and dens. The bears can often be found hiding in the woodlands or cooling off in the freshwater stream.

Ecosystem: Pocosin - typically wet, soggy and dominated by dense vegetation. Pocosin are difficult wetlands to negotiate. Aptly named by Native Americans, pocosin means “swamp on a hill”. These isolated ecosystems make excellent habitat for red wolves, black bears, snakes and more. North Carolina’s abundant pocosins are threatened by agriculture, forestry and proposed mining operations.
