The African Plains exhibit at N.C. Zoo replicates a dry African savanna and the surrounding Forest edge. Look across the vast African savanna, keeping a close eye for impala in lightly wooded areas, Nile lechwe and water buck near watering holes, gemsbok and gazelle on the open plains.
On Exhibit: Elephant, Rhino, Impala, Nile lechwe, Gemmsbok, Gazelle
Ecosystem: Grasslands -
Characterized by a dry climate, rainy seasons and dependency on natural fire, grasslands are equipped to deal with harsh conditions. Much like North American prairies, these ecosystems cannot stand up to our booming human population. Landscape alterations from intensive agriculture and livestock production cause soil erosion and desertification of grasslands, leading to the loss of unique wildlife.
