Behind the Scenes

On this page we've collected a variety of behind the scenes looks at the N.C. Zoo.

It’s Like Being a Chef on Noah’s Ark - Twenty tons of fish, 100 tons of grain, six tons of oranges, three tons of bananas, and 175 tons of hay. It’s not the gross exports of a small nation but a small part of the annual diet of the animals at the N.C. Zoo.

N.C. Zoo’s Rangers Must Wear Many Hats - For park rangers at the North Carolina Zoological Park, the job involves people more than animals. The rangers’ primary job is to provide security and protection for the zoo’s nearly 800,000 yearly visitors. The job can be as simple as giving directions or as serious as administering CPR to a cardiac-arrest victim.

Not All Rocks Are Created Equal at N.C. Zoo - Everywhere N.C. Zoo visitors look, they will see rocks. Rocks are one of the most dominant features, especially when used as confinement walls within animal exhibit areas. They look real and as though they’ve always been there. But most of the rocks within the exhibits are man-made; they are a complex creation of wire mesh, steel armature, concrete and skilled sculpting.

N.C. Zoo Vet Residency Program Attracts Applicants Worldwide - The residency program was begun in the early 1990s by the zoo’s present chief veterinarian Mike Loomis. One person is chosen each year, out of 30 to 50 applicants, for the three-year program offered by the N.C. Zoo and North Carolina State University College of Veterinary Medicine. Although there are many veterinary residency programs offered throughout the country, the N.C. Zoo’s is one of less than a dozen that gives the residents an opportunity to learn about and work directly with exotic and non-domestic animals.
