We are extremely sorry that more than 8,000 visitors were unable to see the Zoo on Saturday and Sunday due to a water line break. The Zoo maintenance staff had worked from Thursday afternoon until around midnight Friday before realizing that the water to the entire park had to be turned off in order to repair the broken line.
We had originally planned to open over the weekend and use portable toilets in the African region when we thought the problem was contained to the African exhibits. Unfortunately the decision to close the entire zoo was made too late to make the 11 o'clock news on television stations or the early editions of the daily papers. We did issue a news release first thing Saturday and also had the information on our Web site Saturday morning.
Obviously we would not have closed the zoo if it had not been absolutely necessary. But since we could not provide water fountains, restrooms or food service, public safety concerns mandated that we close.
Again, we apologize for any inconvenience and hope you will return to enjoy the zoo another day.
