Ridges Mountain, located west of Asheboro in Randolph County, is home to 20 acres of boulders, some of which rise to a height of nearly 50 feet. A 1600s Keyauwee Indian settlement and a 1750s trading post add historical and archaeological value to the site.
The Zoo and the Greensboro-based Piedmont Land Conservancy formed a partnership to acquire Ridges Mountain and are drafting a land-use plan to use in managing the site once the purchase is complete. While presently closed to visitors, the site’s future nature preserve will one day serve as an outdoor classroom for education, conservation and biological research.
