In keeping with the spirit of environmental stewardship N.C. Zoo had it's first department (Horticulture) certified by American Quality Assessors on December 2, 2002. This ISO certification was a first among zoos in the United States and a first among North Carolina State agencies.
In compliance with the ISO 14001 standard, N.C. Zoo established an Environmental Managment System (EMS) which identified the zoo's significant environmental impact and plan of work. In conjunction with the EMS, the zoo deployed its environmental policy.
