Hellbender Research

Conservation research on North America’s largest salamander
Amphibian populations worldwide are experiencing unprecedented declines and many species are rapidly being pushed toward extinction. Addressing this global amphibian crisis has been identified as critically important by a wide range of conservation agencies. Among the North Carolina Zoo’s efforts to conserve amphibians is a survey of wild population of the hellbender (Cryptobranchus alleganiensis, North America’s largest salamander. NCZP Curator of Reptiles John Groves, in collaboration with the NC Department of Wildlife Resources, is conducting research to determine the range of these unique amphibians in North Carolina and to help understand reasons for their decline. Data collected during the course of this project will be used in the development of a state management plan for hellbenders and will be incorporated into future conservation analyses of the species as a whole.
