Sylvan Heights Waterfowl Center operates the largest collection of rare and endangered waterfowl in North America and one of the largest in the world. From humble beginnings in 1989, the eight-acre conservation facility in Scotland Neck, North Carolina is home to 161 species of birds - more than half of the world’s known species of ducks, geese and swans - along with rare species of parrots, cranes and other birds.
World-renowned waterfowl expert and breeder, Mike Lubbock, operates the facility, which trains conservation interns from around the world. The N.C. Zoo, with regular help from other major zoological institutions, including the World Conservation Society (better known as the Bronx Zoo) supports Sylvan Heights important work by seeking donations from private donors to underwrite the costs of caring for these birds.
