In December 2008, the Zoo in partnership with Carolina Solar Energy completed a solar energy project that involves 9,600 sq ft of solar collectors mounted on three large picnic pavilions. This array has the capacity to generate 104 KWH of electricity. CSE is selling the electricity to the electric grid via Randolph Electric Membership Corporation with a subsidy from NC Green Power, a consortium of utilities supporting alternative energy sources. Construction began in September 2007 and the project began generating electricity in December. The Zoo rents the picnic shelters for catered events and the pavilions will include interactive graphics explaining how solar power generation works.
