Tim Mengel is an Animal Management Supervisor in the North American region of the North Carolina Zoo. Tim has 27 years of animal care experience, all with the N.C. Zoo.

He received his Bachelor of Science degree in Zoology, Marine and Fishery Science option, from North Carolina State University. He also obtained an Associate of Applied Science degree in Business Administration while working for the zoo.

Tim supervises zookeepers in the Rocky Coast / Northwoods Prairie sections that are responsible for the daily care and health maintenance of polar bears, seals and sea lions, arctic fox, black bears, grizzly bears, bison and elk. His staff also has the unique opportunity to care for highly endangered red wolves, both in the Red Wolf Exhibit and in the zoo’s off-exhibit red wolf holding area.

The zoo works closely with the United States Fish and Wildlife Service which oversees the red wolf reintroduction program and the only wild population in the Alligator National Wildlife Refuge region of eastern North Carolina.

Tim and staff care a great deal about protecting the environment and preserving the habitats in which animals survive and believe that their work at the zoo promotes education and understanding of the human impact on the fragile balance of nature.
