Ellen Greer is the NC Zoo's Curator of Design. After receiving a degree in art education from East Carolina University and UNC-Chapel Hill, she taught art at the high school and community college level for 11 years. Ellen joined the Zoo staff in 1983 as an exhibit designer and fabricator and in 1990 assumed management of the Design Section.

As a member of the Zoo’s management team, Ellen is involved in strategic as well as project planning, project implementation, scheduling and budget development. As Design Curator she oversees the Design Section, which includes a graphics studio and a full service exhibits shop as well as responsibility for the Zoo’s Arts Program.

The Design Section’s exhibits staff provide custom design, fabrication and maintenance services for a variety of unique education exhibits and animal habitats. The graphics program includes a broad variety of visitor information, educational materials and full support for marketing and fundraising.

Ellen believes that artists and artworks have the potential to deepen the zoo visitor’s understanding of and commitment to natural world. In managing the Zoo's art program, established in 1996, Ellen chairs the Art Steering Committee which establishes priorities for art acquisitions, develops strategies for funding, oversees selection of artists and ensures the on-going maintenance of the art collection.

The Design Section’s goals include excellence in the design and implementation of the Zoo's natural habitat animal exhibits, ensuring that the Zoo's education and conservation messages are presented in the most effective ways possible, maintaining high visual standards throughout the Park, assuring a positive visitor experience and facilitating success in both marketing the Zoo and fundraising efforts by the Society.

Ellen is a practicing artist and active in the local art community. She is a member of the Randolph Arts Guild, the Center for Visual Artists – Greensboro and the Visitor Studies Association.
