Randy has a Ph.D. in Animal Behavior from the University of North Carolina Greensboro. For the last 12 years, as N.C. Zoo's Curator of Conservation & Research, Randy has been responsible for developing and implementing scientific research to enhance the care and management of the Zoo’s animal collection and for overseeing the Zoo’s field conservation programs.

He serves as a member of the Association of Zoos & Aquariums Field Conservation Committee.

Other projects include chimpanzee conservation, reduction of human – elephant conflict, and community education to reduce hunting and promote support for Ugandan national parks. Dr. Fulk also served as Chair of the Ape Taxon Advisory Group (ATAG) for the American Association of Zoos and Aquariums until September 2004.
