Forest Glade

The NC Zoo has a troop of four western lowland gorillas at the Forest Glade exhibit– three mature females and one silverback male. Come face to face with these great apes at two viewing windows at this popular exhibit.
Western Lowland Gorilla
The western lowland gorilla weighs about 400lbs– gorillas are the largest of the living primates. This docile great ape inhabits tropical
African forests rich in low-growing vegetation. Gorilla troops in the wild consist of at least one silverback male, mature females and several juveniles. Troops are well-defined and dominance fights are rare. Silverbacks display and charge to chase away intruders. This intimidating display is usually a bluff and the gorilla typically veers in another direction before reaching their target.
