Gin Wall
Curator of Horticulture
Virginia (Gin) Wall is the North Carolina Zoo’s Curator of Horticulture, the division that is responsible for the care and management of all the zoo’s plant collections.
Gin received her Bachelor of Science in Agriculture (Landscape Horticulture) from Kansas State University and has worked in zoo horticulture for more than 30 years, including the Sedgwick County (Kansas) Zoo and the North Carolina Zoo since 1987.
Gin is active in the Association of Zoo Horticulture and is a founding member of this professional organization. Under Gin’s administration, the Horticulture Division has received numerous awards for zoo landscaping, environmental stewardship and conservation programs. Thanks to her efforts, the N.C. Zoo in 2002 became the first North American zoo to receive ISO 14001 Environmental Management System certification. Other individual awards Gin has received include the AZH Plant Conservation Award - Individual Merit (1999); and the State of North Carolina Governor's Award for Excellence (1993) as part of the Design and Horticulture Division’s efforts in designing the zoo’s Sonora Desert exhibit.
Gin has a strong interest in plant conservation and is continually striving to promote understanding of how essential plants are to the environment. Her goal is to create connections between Zoo audiences, the Zoo’s plant collections and the wild habitats where they are found.
