Dr. Adrian Fowler
Curator of Mammals
Dr. Adrian Fowler is one of NC Zoo’s two mammal curators and has primary responsibility for the management and care of some of our most charismatic species; from gorillas and giraffes in the park’s African region to pumas and seals in North America.
Adrian has more than 25 years of experience in animal care and wildlife conservation, both as a keeper and veterinarian, starting as a teenager working at local zoos in Great Britain and progressing to the management of government agencies, veterinary services and wildlife facilities.
Dr. Fowler is a member of The Royal College of Veterinary Surgeons. He graduated from the University of Bristol, England and trained extensively in zoo medicine & surgery worldwide, including at Zoo Miami & Busch Gardens in the United States. Adrian’s diverse professional background includes working as an Emergency Veterinarian in specialist hospitals in central London; as a General Practitioner in his own clinic in Wales and as a Zoo Veterinarian caring for exotic species, both in captivity and with wild animals in Africa.
One of Dr. Fowler’s areas of special interest is the unique wildlife found on the fragile island of Madagascar, as represented by the lemurs that can be seen at the North Carolina Zoo.
