Today's Baby-Chimp Viewing Cancelled
BY: Tom GillespieAug. 03, 2010
Today’s scheduled media and public viewing of the chimpanzee born at the North Carolina Zoo Monday has been postponed indefinitely.
Problems arose Monday night when zoo keepers observed that the mother was failing to properly care for the infant chimp.
Although both mother and baby are doing well today, they will remain off exhibit for now.
By noon today, a decision will be made either to let the mother keep the infant or to take the baby from its mother for hand-rearing by zoo staff.
The zoo is an agency of the N.C. Department of Environment and Natural Resources, Dee A. Freeman, Secretary; Beverly E. Perdue, Governor.
