BY: Tom GillespieJan. 28, 2008
ASHEBORO, N.C.—With the throw of a switch Tuesday at 10:30, the North Carolina Zoo will house the state’s largest solar power project.
The news media are invited to the ceremonial event which will take place at the Solar Pointe picnic pavilions at the south end of the park’s North America parking lot.
Representatives form Carolina Solar Energy and Randolph Electric Membership Corporation, partners with the zoo on the project, will join Zoo Director Dr. David Jones for the ceremonial switch throwing.
When in full operation, the annual production from the solar-power project should be about 130,000 kilowatt-hours per year, which is the energy used by 11 to 13 average homes in North Carolina.
The zoo is an agency of the N.C. Department of Environment and Natural Resources, William G. Ross Jr., Secretary; Michael F. Easley, Governor.
