NC ZOO CANCELS 2008 GROUNDHOG DAY FESTIVITIES
BY: Tom GillespieJan. 23, 2008
ASHEBORO, N.C.—The North Carolina Zoo has been forced to cancel its 2008 Groundhog Day celebration this year due to the untimely death of its marmot prognosticator Murphy the Groundhog.
The zoo has held a Groundhog Day celebration since 2003, with Murphy providing the prognostication. Until his recent death, Murphy was a permanent resident at the zoo’s wildlife rehabilitation center. Efforts to find a suitable successor to Murphy, so far, have been unsuccessful.
The zoo is an agency of the N.C. Department of Environment and Natural Resources, William G. Ross Jr., Secretary; Michael F. Easley, Governor.
