ZOO COUNCIL AND ZOO SOCIETY BOARD SET JOINT MEETING

BY: Rod Hackney
Jul. 16, 2008

ASHEBORO--The North Carolina Zoological Park Council and the North Carolina Zoological Society’s Board of Directors will hold their annual joint meeting on Wednesday, July 23, at 12:45 p.m., in the zoo’s new Schindler Learning Center.
Council Chairman Scott Reed will preside.

The Zoo Council is a 15-member board appointed by the Governor to oversee the operation and development of the state zoo. The 25-member Society Board oversees the operation of the Zoological Society, the zoo’s nonprofit support organization.

The two boards meet jointly once a year to discuss business and common issues faced by both operations. The July 23 meeting will be preceded at 11:30 a.m. by a tour of the new Schindler Learning Center located on Old Cox Road near the zoo’s veterinary hospital. Completed in early July, the $650,000 Learning Center will provide living quarters for interns, students and scientists studying at the zoo as well as meeting and classroom spaces for educational programs.

Among items on the meeting agenda are a report from Kathy Bull of the N.C. Zoological Society on zoo funding recently provided by the State Legislature, a discussion on plans to expand the zoo’s Polar Bear Exhibit and a summary of other ongoing projects at the park.

The zoo is an agency of the N.C. Department of Environment and Natural Resources, William G. Ross Jr., Secretary; Michael F. Easley, Governor.
