N.C. ZOOKEEPERS SET "BOWLING FOR RHINOS" FUNDRAISER
BY: Rod HackneyMay. 28, 2008
ASHEBORO—The North Carolina Chapter of the American Association of Zoo Keepers, with support from Blue Rhino Gas Company, will host their 18th annual “Bowling for Rhinos” on Thursday, June 5.
This year’s event will begin at 6:00 p.m. at the High Point Bowling Center, 309 West Fairfield Road, in High Point. Each year zookeepers from around the nation participate in this conservation fundraiser with proceeds going to help protect rhinos and other endangered animals.
Bowlers solicit pledges from sponsors which go to support the Lewa Wildlife Conservancy in Kenya and the Indonesian Rhino Conservation Program (IRCP). IRCP supports parks in Indonesia with rhino populations, including Way Kambas (Eastern Sumatra). Way Kambas has the 3rd or 4th largest population of Sumatran rhinos in the world and is a crucial nucleus for the survival of the Sumatran rhino species.
The funds help support staff at the sanctuaries get better training and equipment to enable them to better protect the rhinos from poachers and other threats. Four of the five species of rhinos found in the world today are in danger of extinction due to poaching for their horns and loss of habitat.
