High School Senior Projects
The NC Zoo is dedicated to offering a variety of senior project opportunities that will provide unique experiences to high school seniors. The projects will allow students to gain knowledge, skills and abilities in an atmosphere that promotes conservation, education and environmental awareness.
The NC Zoo is comprised of many work divisions, each specializing in a specific area - much like the workings of a small city. Possible areas for projects include:
- Animal Behavior/Captive Management
- Food Services
- Ticketing/Accounting
- Retail Sales/Displays/Merchandising/Cashiering
- Veterinary Care
- Park Security (Ranger & EMT)
- Horticulture
- Special Events/Marketing
- Transport
- Biodiesel Production
- Wildlife Rehabilitation
- Environmental Services (care of parking lots & restrooms, recycling)
Numerous requests are received each year to afford senior project opportunities in a variety of fields. Because the process is very competitive, it is imperative that students put thought and effort into completion of the application packet.
Purpose
Our program is designed to:
- Offer practical, hands-on experience to students in their field of interest
- Provide opportunities that enhance academic training
- Demonstrate an aspect of new learning and growth
- Generate excitement and enthusiasm in pursuing conservation-related careers
Application Process
Students who are interested in applying for a senior project are required to submit a completed application. The completed application packet must be submitted per established deadlines (Fall - August 30 and Spring - January 30). Applications that are not received by established deadlines and/or incomplete application packets will not be considered.
