EDventures at the Zoo
On Site Programs
Looking for a wild experience for your students? The NC Zoo offers a variety of engaging education programs for school groups visiting the Zoo. These programs enrich student learning about animals, the need for healthy habitats, and the actions they can take to help protect and preserve Earth’s precious natural resources.
EDventures at the Zoo programs last 30 - 45 minutes and cost $50 each. These programs are designed for a maximum of 30 students.
The following programs are available:
ANIMAL WRAPPERS
Audience: Kindergarten - 3rd Grade
Fur, feathers, scales and skin - everything has something on the outside. Come explore the amazing world of animal coverings and discover that although animal "wrappers" come in different colors, shapes and sizes, they all serve as vital protection for those they cover.
GENTLE GIANTS OF THE FOREST
Audience: Kindergarten - 5th Grade
Gorillas are the largest of all great apes and have some scary displays. In reality, they are some of the most peaceful animals in the tropical forest. Explore the Forest Glade gorilla exhibit and learn about the special features and social structure of these gentle giants, their unique adaptations for life in the forest and the important role they play in their natural habitat.
KITERA EXPLORATIONS: A WILD LOOK AT CHIMPANZEES
Audience: 3rd - 8th Grade
Come walk on the wild side as you visit the home of one of the largest chimpanzee troops of any United States zoo. While exploring the Kitera Forest exhibit you’ll see the members of our chimpanzee group, learn about chimp behavior, how they communicate and the status of the species in the wild. Walk away inspired to preserve these animals and their dwindling natural habitat.
THERE’S A TROPICAL FOREST IN MY HOUSE
Audience: 3rd - 8th Grade
Did you know there’s a tropical forest in your house? Look in your kitchen cupboard or in your shower. Do you see any signs of a tropical forest? You may be surprised at how many items in our homes come from plants that grow in the tropical forests. Learn about the importance of healthy tropical forest habitats and the bountiful resources they provide while visiting the Zoo’s RJ Reynolds Forest Aviary. Discover the importance of preserving these natural treasures.
WATANI WONDERS: GENTLE GIANTS OF THE GRASSLANDS
Audience: Kindergarten - 3rd Grade
Home to enormous elephants and roaming rhinos, the NC Zoo's Watani Grasslands is an African savanna that supports large herds of grazing animals. Learn about the distinct adaptations and features of these savanna animals and their grassland habitat.
WE ALL LIVE DOWNSTREAM
Audience: 4th - 8th Grade
Water is our most precious natural resource. Because we share water from one global well, we ALL live downstream. Join us to discover the value of clean water to life on Earth and your role in its preservation. Come prepared to get your hands wet!
WILD ABOUT WETLANDS
Audience: Kindergarten - 8th Grade
Wetlands are wild! They are a home, a restaurant and a nursery all in one. Not only do healthy wetlands support an abundance of plant and animal life, but they provide lots of environmental ‘services’ as well. Discover the many ways wetlands are valuable, the impact of human activities on wetland environments and ways you can help preserve these amazing ecosystems.
SCHEDULING A PROGRAM...
**EDventures at the Zoo programs, for the 2011 calendar year, are no longer being accepted. Please contact the School Programs Office in January 2012 to schedule a winter or spring program.
EDventures at the Zoo programs are offered subject to availability. The NC Zoo requires a minimum of two weeks notice for any programs. Full payment is required a minimum of one week prior to the scheduled program date.
